How is EMDR Different from Other Therapies?
Unlike other treatments that focus on directly altering the emotions, thoughts, and responses resulting from traumatic experiences, EMDR therapy focuses directly on the memory and is intended to change the way that the memory is stored in the brain, thus reducing and eliminating the problematic symptoms.
EMDR therapy allows the brain to resume its natural healing process rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the problem.
EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in 6–10 sessions. The best part is that we can provide EMDR therapy in person or virtually to anyone in Florida.

Trauma is defined as a very painful or disturbing occurrence that can have an impact on one’s emotional, psychological, and even physical well-being.
Trauma can be created by a lack of a sense of safety, whether it was experienced as a child via bullying, verbal abuse, physical or sexual assault, an accident, loss of health, a natural disaster, or even a sense of abandonment.
Trauma is highly individual and subjective. Everyone reacts differently to distressing events. Confusion, numbness, helplessness, embarrassment, disgust, and fury are all common reactions.
Physical and emotional scars left by trauma must be repaired. The effects of a traumatic event may lessen over time for some people. Others may find that the psychological and emotional ramifications of trauma become “stuck” and continue to interfere with their lives.
Unresolved trauma can have a variety of detrimental consequences. Unresolved trauma can have a negative impact on interpersonal relationships, motivation, coping with everyday activities, bodily disease and aches, and even challenges with depression and anxiety.
We offer EMDR Therapy to address the symptoms and assist heal the pain caused by the trauma.

How can EMDR Therapy Help with the Healing Process?
Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala (the alarm signal for stressful events), the hippocampus (which assists with learning, including memories about safety and danger), and the prefrontal cortex (which analyzes and controls behavior and emotion). While many traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, others may not be processed without help.Unlocking Healing: How EMDR Therapy Unburdens the Weight of Distressing Memories
When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create feelings of overwhelm, of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” These stress responses are our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts.
EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.

The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy
How Does Online EMDR Therapy Work?
Online EMDR therapy is typically conducted via video call, allowing clients to participate from the comfort of their own homes. During the session, the therapist may also utilize auditory or tactile stimuli in place of eye movements, depending on the client’s preferences and needs. EMDR therapy has been shown to be effective in treating a range of conditions, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The primary principles and phases of EMDR do not change when done online. It is essentially the same. The pandemic enhanced the need for effective online treatments, and, thankfully, EMDR therapy was able to adapt. Due to the length of the pandemic, extensive research comparing the use of EMDR online versus in person has not been completed. However, pre-published data is promising, and clients are reporting the same progress!
EMDR uses grounding techniques to help the client feel safe during the process. Often, with EMDR online, providers will spend more time focusing on these grounding techniques, or “resources,” since they are less able to support that process remotely.
How is online EMDR different from in-person EMDR?
One of the primary differences between in-person and online EMDR is the way bi-lateral stimulation (BLS) is delivered. EMDR relies on the use of BLS for the desensitization and adaptation of negative memories. This is traditionally done through eye movements, auditory sounds, or tactile stimulation (like tapping).
Here at VGC, when in person, the therapist will utilize their own hands, headphones for the auditory component, and tappers for the tactile component. When the person is receiving EMDR online, they use software that incorporates a moving light, similar to a light bar, and sounds through headphones. VGC uses a HIPPA compliant EMDR platform for your safety and privacy.
Although EMDR is extremely effective, the process requires the activation of negative memory content or triggers, which can be quite uncomfortable or upsetting. Some clients feel more contained and safe doing so in the therapist’s office. Others prefer to be at home where they are most comfortable, meaning they prefer EMDR online.
Who Should Consider Another Treatment Plan?
EMDR delivered online and via telehealth can be effective for most people. Like any telehealth visit, it is not ideal for those who cannot obtain privacy while at home or at work. Those who struggle to cope with negative feelings may want to opt for an in-person setting where they can get an immediate response from the provider who is in the room. In general, the majority of clients would be fine doing EMDR remotely.
What does Very Good Counseling use for online EMDR therapy?
We use remotEMDR software to provide online therapy to our clients.
We chose them due to several factors. It is the only online EMDR platform that enables full synchronization between the BLS on the therapist’s device and the clients’ devices, and it is fully compliant with HIPAA rules and regulations (HIPAA works to protect the confidentiality of people receiving medical treatment).
This platform is accessible from everywhere, on all devices (desktop, laptop, mobile phone, and tablet, including iOS and Android devices). Also, this program is highly customizable for each client, with your therapist controlling BLS movement, and choosing its color, speed, direction, and sound.
