Recent Traumatic Events like Hurricane Ian can leave a community feeling helpless and paralyzed by the natural disaster they have lived through. We struggle to find support for our needs and we are trying to grasp the gravity of the damages and how we will move forward.
People are concerned with the businesses and livelihood, there are impacts on the economy, food and water security, finding shelter, and many other basic needs. There are also common effects that linger after a natural disaster with mental health. Between 15-75 percent of people who experience a natural disaster later develop PTSD.1
We specialize in treatment of persons whom have experienced recent traumatic events. These specialized processes can help an individual have less sadness, grief, guilt, fear, anxiety, and depression around these events.
With the recent Hurricane Ian that has battered our coast and state and left many dealing with overwhelming loss we want to be a resource for Mental Health Recovery after this tragedy has impacted the SWFL community and beyond.
This therapeutic technique is called EMDR therapy. It is a trauma therapy developed, tested, and extensively researched for its process and positive therapeutic effect in treating and helping people to move beyond these traumatic events.2
How soon after trauma can you go to EMDR therapy?
Individuals can benefit by receiving EMDR therapy for recent traumatic events as early as possible-often within the first few days following the event. Early intervention with EMDR helps the client to process the event during the Acute Stress response phase before the memory has fully integrated.3
Early intervention helps to prevent symptoms of PTSD forming into permanent symptoms.
How long does EMDR therapy take to work?
This therapy technique is very powerful and effective form treatment. Many people see a reduction in symptoms in 6-8 sessions with EMDR but the history of the person will be a major factor in how long it will take to complete EMDR therapy from a traumatic experience.
Although EMDR therapy may produce results more rapidly than other forms of therapy, speed is not the goal of therapy and it is important to remember that every client has different needs. We take a client-centered approach to completing therapy with our clients and always work with the individual to determine the pace of therapy.
