ABOUT US
We are Very Good.
Nice to meet you.
…Because We Believe You Matter.
Everything starts with a thought.
While watching Parks and Recreation (TV Series 2009–2015), a favorite television program of the proprietors, the moniker Very Good Counseling originated. The show focused on the ridiculous antics of local government officials in an Indiana town as they pursued various initiatives to improve their community. One of the main characters, Ron Swanson, quits his job in public service to found Very Good Building & Development Co., where they produce excellent building and development-related goods.
We shared the belief that the work we do should be the thing that matters most, much like the work we did in the past for non-profits, community mental health organizations, and governmental organizations. At Very Good Counseling, we set out to do this by focusing on the quality of therapy we provide each client. Even though our company has grown, we continue to provide our patients with extremely high-quality care.
Our Story
Elena and Robert Engle, Founders and Lead Therapists
Even early on in our lives, separately, we both had a passion and a knack for helping people. Psychology just seemed like the natural choice. But along that path, not only did we meet each other but we were introduced to EMDR and were astonished at its power to heal.
It was intriguing. We had spent so much of our careers learning ways to talk about things. How could just a few waves of the hand make things so much better so faster for so many people? But the stories, research and validity of EMDR meant that we could no longer sit on the sidelines. We had to engage in this life-changing process. And then we found out that we were very good at it.
Venturing into the realm of mental health has been a transformative journey marked by self-reflection and personal growth. In a lot of ways, it’s still a relatively new field with a lot of stigma around it. Thankfully, it’s becoming more normalized, and EMDR is leading the way in transforming lives for the better.
At the heart of our practice lies a deep commitment to upholding the principles of client autonomy, respect, authenticity and creating a therapeutic space that fosters trust and openness. After all, we are all humans sharing this life experience together, and if we can help validate one individual at a time then we are helping the greater good.
We work best with clients who just know in their gut that we’re the right therapists for them. That connection, that chemistry is evident from the very first session. Authenticity is the cornerstone of our practice, and it has played a pivotal role in creating a space where clients feel seen and heard.
Our curiosity has allowed us a fervent desire to understand each client’s individual journey. For us, the journey is continuously about how we can bring the best version of ourselves to each session, to each other and to the world around us. It’s such an honor to be the ones a person chooses to help them take the heavy burden they’ve been carrying around for so long and find a safe place to lay it down.
Increasing their autonomy is of the utmost importance to us. By prioritizing client autonomy, we empower them to take an active role in shaping the direction of their healing. This approach allows them to reclaim a sense of control over their own narrative, fostering a renewed sense of agency in the face of adversity. With us, clients come to navigate their challenges with a sense of empowerment and genuine curiosity about their own potential for transformation.
We come alive when we connect with clients who are very creative and artistic, wanting to learn about other perspectives and wanting to learn more about themselves. And as the word spreads about our client-centered approach, individuals seeking therapeutic support are drawn to us increasingly, letting us know that the remarkable growth of our practice isn’t merely some numerical measurement but a reflection of just how much clients resonate with a healing space that emphasizes their autonomy.
The testimonials and feedback along with the growth of our practice are our external markers that serve as tangible evidence of how our core values of autonomy, respect, authenticity and curiosity have translated into real-world impact for our practice, our industry, and, most importantly, for our clients.
We are Very Good.
